What Happens When You Stop Copying (Can a Trader Trap Your Funds?)

safetycopy-tradingbybit

A fair worry before you start: once you copy someone, are you stuck? Can the trader keep your money working for them, or stall you from leaving? The short answer is no, and it is worth seeing exactly why, because the freedom to walk away is one of the strongest parts of how this is built.

You can stop at any time

Copying is something you switch on, and it is something you can switch off, on your own, whenever you decide. You do not request permission from the leader. You do not wait for a notice period. You stop, and the connection ends.

The leader never has a say in it, because the leader never had control of your account to begin with. They run a strategy; the exchange mirrors it into your account while you choose to copy. Remove that choice and the mirroring simply stops.

What happens to your open positions

The practical question is what becomes of trades that are live at the moment you stop. On Bybit you generally have the say here too. You can close out the open copied positions as you exit, or keep them and manage them yourself from then on. Either way they are your positions, in your account, under your control. They do not vanish, and they do not stay tethered to the leader.

It is worth glancing at any open trades when you stop, so you decide deliberately whether to close them or hold them, rather than being surprised later.

Why no trader can trap your funds

This all rests on the same fact that makes copy-trading safe in the first place: custody never leaves you. Your money sits in your own Bybit account the entire time. A leader can place trades that copy into your account, but can never withdraw, transfer, or freeze your balance, and never holds your API keys either.

Because there is no mechanism for a trader to hold your money, there is no mechanism for one to trap it. The power to leave is built into the structure, not granted by the leader’s goodwill.

The bottom line

Starting to copy is not a lock-in. You can stop whenever you want, decide what to do with any open positions, and move your funds freely, all without the leader’s involvement. That exit ramp is always open by design.
